An hour later, he shifted the truck into park and I hopped out, not waiting for him to come around to my side. I pulled my keys from my pocket, meeting him at the hood of the truck. Carson put his hand on the small of my back and led me up the steps to my front door.

My hand shook a little as I stuck the key into the keyhole and Carson kissed the back of my head, his hand sliding over to my hip again.

Damn, his touch was potent.

Inside, I locked the door and emptied my pockets, leaving the contents on the little entrance table before I shimmied out of my leather jacket.

“Can I get you something to drink?” I asked.

“I’ll have whatever you’re having.” He followed me into the kitchen. “This is a great place you got here.”

“Thank you.” I loved our place. We had all the amenities, the neighborhood was fairly safe, and we were only three blocks from campus. I grabbed two brown bottles of my favorite local IPA and handed one to him. “Lucy’s parents bought the duplex as soon as they found out we were both going to school here.”

“That’s a smart investment,” he said, twisting the cap off and passing the bottle back to me before taking the unopened one from my hand. I rolled my lips together to hide my smile and took a healthy gulp.

“I’m grateful for them. They’ve been a huge help.” I tapped my bottle to his, captivated by his eyes and the way they slowly traced the lines of my face and lingered on my lips before finding their way back to mine. “I had a good time tonight.” I pressed my hip against the counter while drinking in my gorgeous date.

“Good. I’d feel like shit if you didn’t,” he said in a smoky tone, his eyes warm with lust as well as his promise to be a man of his word and not push. He set his bottle on the counter and then scrolled through his phone until music started playing. “Dance with me?”

I took his hand and slow danced to a song I had never heard. A flash of déjà vu had me thinking about that dreadful party. The only explanation being that it was the last time I had danced with someone. Did that someone make it out alive? Was he the one that was hurt and in the hospital?

Rather than dwell on thoughts of a stranger, I lay my head on Carson’s chest, loving the feel of his hard muscle against my cheek, happy that he wasn’t one of “those” guys—the kind that said one thing but did another just to get his way with a woman.

His voice was low against my ear as he sang along, my body warming again from our nearness.

We danced. We kissed. It was obvious by the bulge behind his zipper how he felt. I almost crossed that line and led him to my bedroom. But as much as my body wanted him, my mind said I needed to slow down a bit.
